Suspected Pertussis Outbreak in Liberia – FETP Intermediate Cohort 6 Residents Joined Response

Suspected Pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak had been ongoing in Maryland County, Liberia since March 2022. Several children and adults were affected with increase in daily reported cases. Based on number of cases reported by epidemiological week 10-20, a team of three FETP intermediate residents of cohort 6 (FETP-IC6) were set out to support county’s led investigation of the pertussis outbreak with the following objectives to describe the magnitude and characterize the outbreak, identify possible risk factors, and provide the necessary information needed for prevention and control.

As of July 7, 2022, a total of 486 suspected cases have been reported from six health districts in three counties with no laboratory confirmation. Maryland County reported the highest number of cases (377), followed by Grand Kru County (84) and Grand Bassa (25).
