The Liberia Field Epidemiology Training Program (LFETP), in collaboration with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), has launched the third cohort of its Executive training program. Implemented by the African Field Epidemiology Network, this program aims to strengthen Liberia’s epidemiological capacity.

The 8-week training program commenced with an engaging first workshop held from June 19 –23, 2023. Eleven medical directors from major health facilities, representing Margibi, Montserrado, Gbarpolu, Bong, Grand Bassa, and Grand Gedeh counties, participated in the workshop. The primary objective of this training was to enhance the skills of these supervisors in the surveillance system.

Dr. Julius Gilayeneh, Deputy Director General, Technical Services, NPHIL welcomed the LFETP Executive cohort 3 on behalf of the institute.

During the immersive workshop, the participants focused on understanding and discussing their crucial roles and responsibilities in Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR), outbreak investigation, and Public Health surveillance. These essential topics formed the core of their professional development.

Notably, the workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to receive encouragement from delegates from the Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins University. These delegates were assisting NPHIL with workforce needs assessment, working towards strengthening human resource systems for improved health outcomes globally.

Excitingly, the cohort has already embarked on their fieldwork journey. They are actively involved in facilitating an IDSR advocacy and awareness meeting, as well as analyzing surveillance data and identifying solutions to surveillance problems within their respective health facilities.
