In partnership with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) Liberia, the Liberia Field Epidemiology Training Program (LFETP) has launched its 9th cohort of the Intermediate Tier. This 9-month training program started with an intensive workshop on December 9 – 18, 2025.

The cohort comprises 13 residents, including officers from national-level institutions such as NPHIL and the Ministry of Health, District Surveillance Officers from Bomi and Montserrado counties, Zonal surveillance officers from Montserrado and Monitoring and Evaluation officers from Grankru and Sinoe Counties. This diverse group brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the program.

Throughout the workshop, residents delved into various essential topics tailored to their expertise. These included an introduction to Epidemiology, surveillance system operations and evaluation, epidemic investigations, summary statistics, the role of laboratories in public health surveillance, Epi study design, research ethics, public health literature review, scientific report writing, questionnaire design, and comprehensive training on data management. Practical sessions provided hands-on experience with case studies, public health data analysis using Epi-info and Microsoft Excel, survey form design, and advanced application of Microsoft Word for public health report writing.

The workshop served as a foundational building block for participants to enhance their knowledge and skills in epidemiology. The LFETP Intermediate training program aims to equip participants with the necessary expertise to effectively respond to public health challenges. Through theoretical sessions, practical exercises, and mentorship, residents will better understand epidemiological principles and their practical application in real-world scenarios.
